The sequel to Sony’s supernatural comedy “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” aims to defrost an icy workplace. Although “Dune: Half Two” and “Kung Fu Panda 4” helped warm up audiences at multiplexes, total revenue lags 10% behind 2023.
The latest installment of “Ghostbusters” is expected to gross between $43 million and $45 million from 4,300 theaters in its domestic box office debut. Those ticket sales would match the start of its franchise predecessor, 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which debuted with $44 million while theaters were just beginning to recover from COVID. That film, which successfully revived the paranormal series after 30 years, ultimately grossed $129.3 million in North America and $204 million worldwide, for a budget of $75 million. “Frozen Empire” costs $100 million, so it will have to surpass the previous film to justify its price. (This is because cinema operators are able to keep around 50% of revenue).
“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” co-writer Gil Kenan took over directing “Frozen Empire” from Jason Reitman, whose father, Ivan, directed 1984’s “Ghostbusters.” Instead, he wrote the script with Kenan. The latest entry takes place roughly four decades after the original – the ill-fated 2016 reboot does not exist in this universe – and revolves around a family with a connection to the legendary ghost-catching enterprise. In “Frozen Empire,” new recruits (Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon and Finn Wolfhard) team up with veteran Ghostbusters (Invoice Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts) to prevent an apocalyptic deity from starting a second Ice Age .
In other box office fare, Sydney Sweeney’s spiritual horror film “Immaculate” aims to gross $5 million from 2,000 theaters in its first weekend of release. Neon is supporting the film, which recently premiered at SXSW.
Directed by Michael Mohan, “Immaculate” follows Cecilia (Sweeney), an American nun who joins a remote convent in the Italian countryside. But her warm welcome is cut short after she discovers her new home holds some dark secrets. Regardless of combined opinions, critics praised Sweeney’s efficiency with Selection Stephen Saito writing, “the film shows how she will actually hold the screen.”
