The South Korean box office had a popular appearance. Dark drama, “Exhuma” dominated the charts with over 50% market share for the fourth weekend in a row. And, for the third weekend in a row, “Dune 2” came in second place.
“Exhuma,” about two shamans, a feng shui master and a mortician who try to reverse the mysterious events taking place in a U.S.-based Korean family, grossed $5.80 million between Friday and Sunday. This represented a 67% share of the overall box office market, according to data from tracking service Kobis, operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
This increased the film’s revenue to US$67.3 million after almost 4 weeks of release. The figure is by far the best this year and the fourth highest efficiency since the start of the COVID pandemic.
So far, “Exhuma” has purchased 9.30 million tickets. And it looks certain to surpass the ten million ticket mark, which is the accepted benchmark for a blockbuster in Korea.
“Dune 2” grossed $1.73 million over the weekend, representing a 19% share of the entire market. Its cumulative total over nearly three weeks after release now stands at $13.6 million. This is the third highest score this year in Korea in terms of office income and the fourth highest in admissions. (“Citizen of a Sort” claims third place as measured by gross ticket sales.)
Chart positions 3, 4 and 5 remained unchanged from weekend to weekend. “Wonka” remained in third place with $335,000, for an operating total of $25 million. “Poor Issues” came in fourth with $174,000 for a two-weekend total of $822,000.
The Korean animation, “Bread Barbershop: Celeb in Bakery City” came in fifth place with US$128,000, bringing its total to US$1.09 million in three weeks.
The action thriller starring Liam Hemsworth, Luke Hemsworth and Russell Crowe, “Land of Dangerous” was the highest-ranking release in Korea. It opened in sixth place with US$105 thousand between Friday and Sunday and US$165 thousand in 5 days.
Korean-American drama “Previous Lives” came in seventh place. It grossed $117,000 for a total of $612,000 over two weekends. As with “Poor Things,” the film’s Oscar appearance appeared to have little immediate impact on the box office in Korea.
“Bob Marley: One Love”, a success in many international markets, debuted in Korea at number eight. Won $87,000 in the correct weekend and $187,000 in 5 days.
“The Delivery of Korea” totaled $58,400 for a total of $8.09 million since February 1. And he won ninth place. The Canadian animated film “Katak: The Courageous Beluga” opened in tenth, grossing US$59,000 in five days.
