Some ovations defy explanation – like this crowd on the beach in Venice, Florida, watching the gruesome removal of a stranded sperm whale but erupting in applause… all captured on video.
Check out the new footage we’ve obtained showing the whale’s massive body being mutilated by a bulldozer – definitely not for the faint of heart or stomach – but a group of beachgoers found reason to boo, scream and cheer in the process.
The removal was coordinated earlier this week by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – also known as NOAA – along with a local marine laboratory.
The stranded whale was first spotted Sunday night and was reportedly still alive before it died the next morning when authorities quickly attempted to move the decomposing corpse.

This video takes a closer look at the initial attempt to move the enormous mammal, as several bystanders record the scene.
Not surprisingly, some residents were disturbed by the crowd’s reaction, and a PETA rep told TMZ… “With the planet’s oceans being sterile, the death of any aquatic animal is a high-risk tragedy, and PETA urges everyone upset at the sight of this stranded whale to throw a lifeline to all marine life by going vegan.”
However, as graphic as the removal is, PETA has no problem with NOAA’s process… telling us it’s “standard operating procedure.”
The city of Venice was forced to issue a no-swimming notice at the beach due to the carcass – which may be one reason for the applause.
Researchers cut open the whale’s corpse on Monday, causing the blood to leak into the water. Translation: The bloody scene could have attracted sharks to shore, putting swimmers in danger.
By the way, this whale tale has some history…namely, the story of the sperm whale that washed ashore in Florence, OR – which was torn to smithereens at the time, in a horrible way.
This was shocking then, and it is equally shocking now. No matter the motivation behind the applause… it’s brutal to see.
