Nevada police are investigating after a black man shared a video in which he claims a white man called him racial slurs and advised him to “hang yourself.”
The viral footage begins with the white man smiling and giving the middle finger to the black man, who has since been recognized as Rick Johnson. Johnson asks where the supposed “hangman tree” is and the white man says again: “In your backyard.”
The video was filmed Friday outside the Firehouse Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada, during a classic car show called “Shot August Nights” … and Johnson said he was there registering people to vote.
Johnson continues to film the person, who asks him to leave. Johnson stands… after which his antagonist tells him: “I don’t make trash, I burn it.”
Onlookers try to diffuse the situation, but the two men continue to fight… and then two girls come out of the room and try to take Johnson away.
He tells one of the many girls… “Your daddy just said there’s a hanging tree for n****** like me. What does that mean?”
Johnson captioned the 5-minute video… “Racism at its peak, Virginia Metropolis, Nevada.”
The Storey County Sheriff’s Office said it received reports of the incident, viewed the video and is investigating.
The sheriff says… “We at the sheriff’s office do not tolerate or support racism, inequality or hate speech.”
Meanwhile, Nevada attorney Normal Aaron D. Ford says it is “aware of the hateful and racist incident captured on digital camera in Virginia City, one of Nevada’s most historic cities… I fully condemn his actions.”
