A tender for the new Igoumenitsa – Corfu High Voltage Transmission Line (mixed line of underground and underwater cables with respective works) has been announced by ADMIE, with the aim of strengthening the island’s electrical system.
It is the third road connecting Corfu to the Continental System through the new “Aetos – Corfu” cable link, with completion estimated for 2025.
The project concerns the design, supply and installation of an integrated 150 kV single-circuit cable system for the interconnection of Igoumenitsa with Corfu. The aim of the project is to ensure a secure supply to the island by strengthening its existing interconnection.
Today, Corfu is connected to the mainland electricity system by two 150 kV cable lines. The new project constitutes the third 150 kV cable line, which will be laid on a new route. Upon completion of the project, it will be possible to safely cover an additional load of at least 60 MW, even under emergency conditions.
What does the project include?
The project includes the design, supply and installation of underground (4 km) and underwater (17.1 km) 150 kV AC cables, within 12 months after signing the contract with the contractor.
In particular, the first part of the project includes a 150 kV three-core underwater cable, 17.1 km long, with two integrated fiber optic telecommunications underwater cables, which will connect the “Aetos” area of Filiaton Municipality with the “Ormos Potamos” area of Central Corfu district.
The second part of the project includes a 150 kV three-phase underground cable circuit, accompanied by two underground fiber optic cables, 320 m long.
In its last section, the 150 kV three-phase underground cable circuit (with fiber optic cables) will be connected to the Corfu I Substation.
This is a major new project, with a budget of €42,800,000, which protects the resilience of Corfu’s electricity system, as it will safely cover the ever-increasing demand that occurs mainly during the summer months (due to tourism).
ADMIE is investing €100 million by 2025, based on its 10-year development plan, to improve electrical interconnections in the Ionian Islands that will ensure their smooth energy supply.
