MEPs will meet on Monday 15 July in Strasbourg for the first time Plenary Session after the June 9 elections.
To be a candidate, it is necessary to have the support of a political group or of at least 36 MEPs. Whoever obtains an absolute majority, by secret ballot, is elected president.
If after three ballots none of the candidates manages to obtain a majority, a fourth ballot is held, in which the two candidates who obtained the most votes in the third ballot participate. For a president to be elected, he or she must have obtained a majority of valid votes.
It should be remembered that Roberta Metsola presented her candidacy for the presidency of the Chamber.
Furthermore, European Union (EU) leaders elected António Costa as the new President of the European Council.
Ursula von der Leyen it was proposed to continue as President of the European Commission for another five years and the Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, i.e. succeeding Jozep Borel.
