The massive fire that broke out in Acharnes on Karamanli Avenue is still raging, with the flames quickly spreading to factories in the area and finally being contained in the Helidonous stream.
The fire completely burned down a paper mill, where there are large amounts of fuel. Even now, thick black smoke is pouring out of the factory. 88 firefighters and dozens of volunteers are on site. Several other commercial premises were damaged. The images are a nightmare.
The Battle Continues – How Things Happened
Strong firefighting forces remain on site and the situation is now improving.
The fire first broke out in low-lying areas between the factories shortly before midnight. Because the battle was fought at night, no air support was possible. Winds gusting to 6 Beaufort were blowing through the area.

Two messages were sent via 112 to residents in the wider area, urging people near Rema of Helidonous to stay indoors and close doors and windows due to the toxic smoke.
Residents were also told to be ready to evacuate, but that did not turn out to be necessary. The atmosphere in the area remains suffocating.
Traffic Arrangements – Where traffic is being diverted
Traffic rules remain in force. In particular, vehicles are being diverted on Karamanli Street from the top of Fountoukias Street upstream and from the top of Dekelias Street downstream.
Furthermore, vehicles are being diverted in the Acharna area 1) at Karamanli and Dekeleias Street, 2) at Tatoiou and Dekeleias Street, 3) at Tatoiou and Artemisos Street and 4) at the Metamorfosi junction to Tatoiou Street. Finally, according to the latest information from the police, vehicles are being diverted in the Acharna area at the intersection of Spyros Vrettos and Kypros Streets towards Spyros Vrettos.
