On strike and protest from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, the Staff Association of Chania General Hospital and EGESYCH GNX, in the courtyard of the Emergency Department, on the occasion of the verbal attack-threat to the physical integrity of a colleaguespecialist doctor, who was on duty at the Emergency Department of Chania Hospital.
According to the president of the hospital workers, Vardis Georgiakakis, “we declare that we are against any form of violence against the workers of Chania hospital and all incidents will be reported to the competent authorities”.
According to Giorgos Bea, administrator of Chania Hospital, the case, as he told APE-MBE, concerns a relative of an elderly patient, who threatened a specialist doctor. “As the hospital administration, we position ourselves against any form of violence and I would like to remind you that the new legislation is strict regarding the safe operation of all health facilities and professionals.”
Report of “sudden death” in Radiodiagnosis
Meanwhile, the Chania Hospital workers’ association denounces the situation prevailing in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, which is in a state of “sudden death”, as described by the association’s presidency, due to a lack of staff. “We demand that the Department of Diagnostic Radiology be fully staffed with new permanent medical staff and that the PPP be immediately extended to all vacancies that will be created, starting in August. We will not allow exhaustive overtime for the remaining doctors… (10-11 shifts) just to cover the monthly shifts, with all that this implies for the physical and mental health of the remaining doctors.”
The safe functioning of the Radiodiagnostic Department seems impossible, according to President Vardis Georgiakakis, with the current form of operation, “with permanent (not temporary) doctors and with the current number of 3-4 by the end of the year who will be required to cover 60-62 active calls per month. And of course, if others have not yet resigned. We demand immediate assistance from all those involved in the smooth and uninterrupted functioning of this vital part of our hospital.”
As Giorgos Beas, administrator of the nursing institution of the Chania prefecture, told APE-MBE, “in recent years, the administration has signed the appointment of three new permanent radiologists and one assistant. Of these, the two women resigned for personal reasons that have nothing to do with the NHS or the functioning of the hospital. The administration is concerned about the staffing of the service, but also about filling the vacancies with the next call for applications, so that our hospital has the largest possible number of radiologists and other specialties.” At the same time, he reported that the hospital has signed a cooperation agreement in the last two years with two private radiologists, to cover the needs of the radiodiagnostic service.
