Georgia pulled off the biggest comeback (so far) at the European Championship in Germany, defeating Portugal 2-0 on the final (3rd) matchday of Group 6.
The team that eliminated Greece to stay in Germany secured qualification to the round of 16, in its first participation in the competition, reaching 4 points and taking third place.
The victory of Willy Sániol’s team left Hungary out of the fight for third place, while at the same time changing the crosses in the qualifiers.
The “magician” Kvaratshelia opened the scoring in the 2nd minute and Mikautadze closed it in the 57th minute, with a penalty. Georgia’s historic first victory in a EURO finals will come against Spain on 30 June (Cologne), while the Iberians face Slovenia on 1 July in Frankfurt.
Vincenzo Modela’s Turkey finished second in their group, defeating the Czech Republic 2-1 in Gelsenkirchen in their second group game.
The neighboring country will face Austria on July 2, in Leipzig. The Turkish goals were scored by Tsalhanoglu at 51′ and Tosun at 90’+4, while for the Czechs, who were eliminated, Sucek equalized at 66′.
It should be noted that the Czech Republic played with one man less for most of the game, due to Barak’s expulsion in the 20th minute with two yellow cards in the space of a few minutes.
