The UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, highlighted that “we are aware of the challenges, but we are confident and remain optimistic”, during the press conference at the international organization’s headquarters in New York.
For the Cyprus issue
Mr. Lacroix, responding to a question from the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency in relation to the postponement of Ms Holgin’s trip to Cyprus, highlighted the importance of ongoing discussions on the Cypriot.
“Well, let me say this. What is important is that these discussions are ongoing and Ms. Holguin will meet with leaders from both sides. I think the way in which (they are done) is probably important to the fact that these discussions are taking place, so we certainly continue to support those efforts, because UNFICYP, of course, works closely together, but the mandates are different. After all, we are dealing with the same problem and it is certainlyWe hope these talks lead to progresso, in political dialogue. We are aware of the challenges, but we are confident and remain optimistic,” she noted.
