Vangelis Marinakis returned to the presidency of the Superliga, just months after resigning as head of the cooperative.
In the elections held on Wednesday afternoon to elect Minas Lysandros’ replacement, the majority shareholder and president of PAE Olympiacos prevailed by one vote (7-6) over his opponent and Panathinaikos counterpart, Yiannis Alafouzou.
Marinakis was also president of the League in the recent past, specifically from June 2022 to January 2024, when he resigned following the motion of censure that would be presented to him by the majority of League members.
PAOK, Olympiacos, Atromitos, Asteras Tripoli, Volos, Panserraikos and OFI voted in favor of Marinakis’ election, while Alafouzou’s candidacy was supported by AEK, Panathinaikos, Lamia, Levadeiakos, Kallithea and Aris.
PAE Panitolikos voted “blank”, while the EPO abstained from the process.
Remember that the presidential vote of Minas Lyssandros (OFI) counted as double, so even in the event of a tie (7-7) Vangelis Marinakis would still prevail.
