North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the maritime area off the east coast of the Korean peninsula, according to a statement from South Korea’s National Defense General Staff.
The launch was confirmed by the Japanese Ministry of Defense.
Angered by the sending of the US aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt to the Korean peninsula, Pyongyang announced a “new demonstration of deterrent power”. The nuclear aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt sailed into the South Korean port of Busan on Saturday to participate in joint exercises with South Korean and Japanese forces.
The missile launch comes one day after the 74th anniversary of the start of the Korean War.
In recent weeks, North Korea has intermittently sent hundreds of garbage balloons to South Korea. At the same time, North Korean soldiers are building new fortifications near the two countries’ border, according to the National Defense General Staff in Seoul.
