Daniel Radcliffe may not be returning to the Harry Potter restart the series on Maxbut he has some words of wisdom for the next team.
Talking to ET’s Rachel Smith 2024 Tony Awards on Sunday, the 34-year-old actor — who attended as a nominee and later won his first Tony for its role in Happily we roll — shared that while he’s not sure what he would say to the cast members who go to Hogwarts, he knows what he would say to the producers whose words and actions will forever impact the children cast in the lead roles.
“I have advice for everyone else,” joked Radcliffe. “Like, let them still be kids. I can’t imagine what it would have been like to do that in the age of social media. We were just before that.”
Radcliffe played Harry Potter in the eight films released by Warner Bros. between 2003 and 2011. He added that when the time comes for HBO to announce the next generation of actors, he hopes to be able to talk to the team behind the project.
“I don’t know. I hope to meet whoever that person is one day and be face to face,” Radcliffe told ET.
In July, ET spoke with the actor, who played the titular character for nearly a decade, and he shared that while he’s happy to see history live, he doesn’t see himself being a part of it in any way.
“I highly doubt that will happen,” he said of being asked to appear on the show. “It seems to me that they are wanting to do a new series, and it seems like it would be a distraction to have haggard old Harry also entering from stage left.”
Radcliffe also said he’s “certainly not looking” for a role in the reboot, but said he’s “very supportive” of the series moving forward.
In April 2023, HBO and Max employees shared for the first time that about 12 years after the end of the original film series – based on JK Rowling’s best-selling books – a television series also inspired by the books was in the works.
“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way,” said Casey Bloys, president and CEO of HBO & Max Content, at the time. “Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear that there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and JK Rowling, this new Max Original series will take a deep dive into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy all these years.”
Radcliffe is too focused on his Tony-nominated musical to think about anything completely out of his control, of course. On Sunday, the actor won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical. He told ET earlier in the evening that he couldn’t be more excited (or nervous) to discover his fate and perform alongside his co-stars, Lindsay Mendez and Jonathan Groff, both without a hitch.
“It’s very emotional, you know, I was very calm before and now I’m not very calm,” he shared. “It’s a big night… it’s desperate and exciting.”
