Donald Trump’s former communications strategist Steve Bannon will be released from prison next week after serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress.
The famous podcaster was found to have illegally refused to testify before the committee investigating the storming of the Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters on January 6, 2021.
His lawyers tried to secure his early release, but their requests were rejected. Bannon remains in federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut.
The defining role in the first Trump administration
He was a key player in Trump’s elevation to the Oval Office in 2016 and later became chief White House strategist. He left the government after a violent far-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017, but remains an important ally of the former president.
If Donald Trump is elected, many believe he will assume the top job again.
Bannon said he was following legal advice in refusing to testify before a House committee investigating Jan. 6 when rioters ransacked the U.S. Capitol to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.
Its release date is set for October 29th.
