Prosecutors argue that Bryce Schubert, 27, was “intentionally merciless” toward Melissa Jubane, allegedly using a gun in her murder, and that it is the state’s perception that “future efforts to rehabilitate the defendant will not be successful.”
Bryce Schubert, 27, of Beaverton, Oregon, appeared in court last Tuesday for less than two minutes for a brief hearing. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree abuse of a corpse in the death of 32-year-old newlywed nurse Melissa Jubane.
The victim disappeared a few days after the wedding, with the Beaverton Police Division reporting in an announcement that they performed a wellness check on September 4 after she failed to return to work at St. Windfall Hospital in Portland.

Investigating Jubane’s disappearance
Authorities said his unreported absence raised “issues among his co-workers, friends and family.” A search of his home revealed nothing, while “his absence without communication was considered unusual and alarming,” according to police.
That Saturday, during which time police carried out an “intensive investigation,” Jubane’s remains were found and Schubert was arrested and charged with murder. Jubane and Schubert lived in the same condominium, according to local NBC affiliate KGW.
He was charged along with her September 7 homicide, although no quick connection other than being neighbors was immediately obvious between them. The initial charge was second-degree murder, but it has since been upgraded to the primary level.

Prosecutors about Schubert
According to court documents seen by KGW, prosecutors believe Schubert was “intentionally ruthless” during Jubane’s murder, noting that a gun was used in her murder.
On Thursday, October 17, Washington County Senior Assistant District Attorney Andrew Freeman filed notice that his workplace and the state of Oregon could be seeking “jury discovery (or defendant admission) ” in this case.
Schubert briefly appeared in court on September 10, where his lawyer attempted to plead not guilty, but as no charges were filed against him, this argument was rejected. 17 witnesses later and a grand jury decided there was enough evidence to indict him.
Court documents further acknowledged the prosecution’s argument that “future efforts to rehabilitate the defendant will not be successful.” The documents emphasize that the “damage or loss award attributed to the present crime of conviction was considerably better than normal for such a crime,” adding that there is a “need” for public safety.
