European foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said today that a ceasefire is a priority in the Middle East and that the assassination of Hamas leader Yahya Shinwar by Israeli forces could increase the chances of this being achieved.
“After the murder from Sinuar A new perspective has opened up and we must use it to achieve a truce, the release of the remaining (Israeli) hostages and seek a political perspective”, Josep Borrell told journalists at a meeting of G7 defense ministers in Naples.
Borrell also said that the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFILcould be reinforced after being attacked during clashes between Israel and Hezbollah.
“United Nations forces must be respected throughout the world… perhaps UNIFIL’s mission must be reviewed, but the first thing that must be done is a ceasefire,” Borrell said, adding that it was up to the Security Council UN Council will decide on UNIFIL.
