Pack your bags! When Diane von Fürstenberg gets dressed, a simple mantra guides her. The 77-year-old native of Brussels, Belgium, told ET her tips for achieving a chic look while celebrating the opening of Diane von Fürstenberg: Woman Before Fashion Exhibition at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California.
“I have always referred to the motto la petite valise when designing my collections and curating my own wardrobe. The French phrase, which translates to small suitcase, is a symbol of dressing easily and practically; essential when creating the perfect look. If you know how to pack your bags, you know how to live”, he explained.
“The foundation of a woman’s closet should be practical, basic pieces that never go out of style. Once you have your favorite classics, you can weave statement pieces through bold colors, fabrics, and silhouettes to coincide with each season. simple way to add a little something extra to any everyday look,” he added.
An absolute must-have? The designer’s beloved wrap dress, which has been worn by celebrities including Cindy Crawford, Madonna, Zoe Saldana, Kat Hudson, paris hilton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kendall Jenner and much more.
“While designs and silhouettes have changed over the years to keep up with ever-changing trends, the core values of the DVF brand have always remained the same. We’ve kept our iconic designs, like the wrap dress, but found ways to elevate styles to stay fresh,” noted the philanthropist.
von Fürstenberg is even influenced by her brand’s users when creating pieces.
“The exhibition title Woman Before Fashion explains it all. … DVF pieces are designed with the women who wear and live in them in mind, first and foremost. … I find myself constantly inspired by the incredible women around me, which I then incorporate into my designs ” she said.
“With every design decision I make, whether it’s fabrics, colors or silhouettes, I hope to create iconic looks that inspire women to feel confident and free. Woman Before Fashion Exhibition.”
