Hero Karizma sales at all-time low, XMR launched in August last year
Hero Karizma, once a dominant player in the Indian motorcycle market, has seen a significant drop in sales, raising concerns about its future. Sales data from 2024 shows a continued drop in demand, despite the brand’s efforts to relaunch with a new model in 2023.
Karizma’s Legacy
Launched in the early 2000s, the original Karizma quickly established itself as a popular choice among Indian motorcyclists. Known for its elegant design, robust performance and cutting-edge technology, the bike has gained a loyal following.
However, things changed when Hero MotoCorp parted ways with Honda, its former partner responsible for technological and design expertise. In 2014, Hero introduced a new version of the Karizma, but the bike did not live up to expectations. It was widely criticized and sales plummeted, forcing Hero to withdraw it from the market.
The 2023 relaunch
In 2023, Hero reintroduced Karizma with new design, competitive features and reasonable price. The change aimed to capitalize on the brand’s nostalgic appeal while attracting modern riders. But despite the strong reputation of the Karizma name, the relaunch has struggled to gain momentum.
It is powered by a 210cc, liquid-cooled, 4-valve, DOHC engine that produces 25.5 PS at 9,250 RPM and 20.4 Nm of torque at 7,250 RPM. This engine is associated with a 6-speed gearbox with a slipper and assisted clutch system.
Drop in sales in 2024
Sales figures for 2024 reflect this struggle. The Karizma sold 947 units in April, but the numbers steadily declined in the following months: 663 units in May, 476 in June and 529 in July. In August, sales fell to 258 units and in September they fell sharply to just 48 units. This consistent drop suggests a wider issue of declining interest in motorcycles, with September’s figures marking a worrying low point.
The way forward for Karizma
Hero MotoCorp now faces the challenge of reviving interest in the Karizma. The brand still maintains a strong legacy among Indian motorcyclists, but the current model has not attracted the attention of new buyers. Hero may need to rethink its strategy – be it through design changes, a more aggressive marketing push or performance improvements to keep the Karizma relevant in today’s competitive market.
