Rita Ora fought back tears as she paid tribute to Liam Payne, who died yesterday after falling from the three-story balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Ora was on stage at Zepp Namba in Osaka, Japan, just hours after reports of Payne’s death emerged. During the performance, she sang “For You,” her 2018 collaboration with Payne from the “Fifty Shades Freed” soundtrack, as she paid a moving tribute to the late musician.
“I can’t even sing this right now,” she told the audience, burying her face in her hands. When a photo of her and Payne appeared behind her, she walked toward the class, encouraging them to sing for her.
She later posted a remembrance on social media, sharing how much she appreciated the One Route member and commenting on the tragedy of his sudden passing.
“I’m devastated He had the kindest soul, I will always remember,” she wrote. “I really loved working with him – it was a pleasure to be present on and off the stage. This tragic news breaks my heart. Sending all my love and prayers to your family and relatives. Our song For You takes on a completely new meaning for me now. TO TEAR APART”
Payne died yesterday aged 31 after falling from a balcony. He had spent the last few weeks in Argentina, where he reunited with his One Route bandmate Niall Horan at one of their shows. He was there with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, who had returned to the United States two days before his death.
