Alexandra-Patision is renamed Cinobo Patision, becomes the exclusive home of Midnight Express and returns with films not shown anywhere else, curated by Cinobo and Akis Kapranos.
Cinobo, the Greek streaming platform, after the reopening of the iconic Cine Paris in Plaka and the Cinobo Opera in the center of Athens, is saving the historic Alexandra cinema that was at risk of closing permanently. Designed, curated and supported by Cinobo and its program Akis Kapranoufrom the curator behind the legendary Midnight Expressthe hall is renamed Cinobo Patision and becomes the best independent cinema and also the exclusive headquarters of Midnight Express.
Cinobo Patision, starting Thursday, October 17, 2024, will feature daily airings of select cult singles, classics and new releases. With marathons and tributes such as 70s Jive and Action Sundays, with questions and answers, cosplay and unique experiences, the hall is ready to become the definitive underground destination for those who want to experience cinema in a different way.
The rebirth of ancient Alexandra-Patision
Alexandra-Patision has been hosting the best films of recent decades since 1961, making the theater a landmark in the region. The name change to Cinobo Patision marks not just a renewal, but a complete rapprochement of what a cinema can be. Taking inspiration from the theater’s defining location at one of the central points of Patision Street – an iconic street that connects the historic center of Athens to a more underground neighborhood that has defined the urban landscape for years – Cinobo is rebranding the historic cinema into Cinobo Patision, with the ambition of bringing cinephile culture from another time to this day and creating a community of people who love cinema and interact.
PROGRAM
Cinobo Patision will show more than 30 films every month, divided into different themed sections. The October program includes:
ALMODOVAR PUNK
October is dedicated to Pedro Almodóvar, specifically his early days and films rarely shown in Greece. Furious and very funny, the Spanish director’s first films are, in addition to being very fun, a symbol of the era of freedom that began in the 80s. A retro Almodóvar that seems fresh even today, films with a strong punk element of the time, films with audacity and insolence, collected for the first time in a tribute.
GHIBLI CLASSICS
The 1980s were defined cinematically by the Ghibli Movies, Japanese animated films, which still have a fanatical audience. Most of them are now rare and difficult to find. Cinobo Patision brings imagination and color to the big screen in a tribute to the community that loves this special cinematographic genre and invites animation fans to join the themed nights and surprises to be announced soon.
JARMUSCH REVIEW
Every month, we review the work of a great director, showing films from the beginning of his career to the most recent. October brings Jim Jarmusch to the big screen, while November will be followed by an extensive tribute to Francis Ford Coppola.
MIDNIGHT EXPRESS
THE Midnight Express bring your fanatical audience Akis Kapranou in your new home. Starting October 19th and every Saturday, the most interactive film-loving community gathers at Cinobo Patision to create new cinematic memories. Viral film events that consistently sell out have become an important part of Athens pop culture. This particular program will even be an invitation for those who truly love cinema, because if the cinema is successful and moviegoers embrace it, it will undergo further renovations to become a long-lasting home for the entire community.
ACTION SUNDAYS
Every Sunday, in the early afternoon, Cinobo Patision offers meetings of adventure, true fun and timeless humor, with action films – “diamonds” from the 80s and 90s, which we all love. A cinema with true and highly realistic action scenes, with strong emotions, a cinema that still, fortunately, causes amazement.
GREEK CINEMA
Mondays bring Greek films to the Cinobo Opera that have every reason to be loved by the cinephile public. Films that may not have received the exposure they deserved when they were released, or films that we love to watch over and over again with strong performances from Greek leads.
NEW CIRCULATIONS
The Cinobo streaming platform presents new films daily, current prominent directors from all corners of the world and the most anticipated releases of the year.
The detailed schedule and even more surprises will be announced soon.
