French President Emmanuel Macron considered it “totally unacceptable” that UN peacekeeping forces were “intentionally targeted” by Israeli armed forces in southern Lebanon and warned that his country “will not tolerate” this happening again.
“We condemn this. We do not and will not tolerate it happening again”, said the French president who is participating in the Summit of the Mediterranean Member States of the European Union (Med9), in Cyprus. He even thanked these countries for clearly being on the side of France on this issue.
Macron estimated that “the only lever” to end the conflicts is to “stop the export of weapons” used in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. But he assured that this is not about the “disarmament” of Israel.
“France asked to stop the export of weapons used in theaters of war. And other leaders here did the same. We all know that, it is the only lever that can put an end to conflicts today,” he said. In this case, an appeal to Israel to disarm itself in the face of the threats that this country and these friendly people receive”, he added.
A similar appeal was made today by Spain.
A ceasefire is necessary, both for Gaza and Lebanon, insisted Macron, speaking to journalists. It is also necessary for our hostages” who have been held by Hamas in the Palestinian enclave for a year, “for the civilian populations who are victims of violence and to prevent a regional spread that threatens the stability of the entire region and beyond.”, estimated the French president.
