The Democratic candidate for president of the United States maintains the lead, Kamala Harrisagainst his Republican opponent, donald trumpaccording to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, just weeks before the November 5 elections.
In particular, Kamala Harris scores 46% with the former US president and re-candidate donald trump to receive 43%.
The four-day poll that ended on Monday showed that Trump, who trailed Harris by six points in the Sept. 20-23 Reuters/Ipsos poll, was the preferred candidate on a range of economic issues and that some voters may be influenced by his claims that “illegal immigrants in the country are prone to crime,” claims that have been widely discredited by academics and think tanks.
The survey had a margin of error of around 3 percentage points.
The economy is the main issue for voters
In particular, respondents ranked the economy as the top issue facing the country, and about 44 percent said Trump had the best approach to addressing the “cost of living,” compared to 38 percent who chose Harris.
Among a series of economic issues that the next president will have to deal with, about 70% of those surveyed said that the cost of living would be the most important, with only small shares choosing the job market, taxes or “leaving me in a better financial situation.” . Trump had more support than Harris in each of these areas, although voters, by a margin of 42% to 35%, believed that Harris was the best candidate to bridge the gap between wealthy Americans and average Americans.
Trump is gaining ground on immigration
Trump appeared to be driven by widespread concerns about immigration, which is currently at its highest level in America in a century. About 53% of voters surveyed said they agreed with the statement that “immigrants who are in the country illegally pose a risk to public safety,” compared to 41% who disagreed. Voters were more divided on the issue in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in May, when 45% agreed and 46% disagreed.
Voters trust Harris’s mental acuity more than Trump’s in the latest poll, with 55% agreeing with the statement that she was “mentally sharp and able to face challenges,” compared to 46% who said the same about Trump .
