The Italian Prime Minister, Georgia Melonihad a telephone conversation this afternoon with the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In a statement from the Italian government, it is highlighted that during the conversation reference was made to bilateral relations and the desire to strengthen them, while Georgia Meloni invited the Turkish president to visit Italy, on the occasion of the two countries’ intergovernmental conference, in the first half of 2025.
The conversation also discussed the situation in the Middle East. Meloni reiterated that Israel has the right to defend itself and highlighted, at the same time, the need to increase aid to the affected civilian population. A common will emerged to make efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. The Italian Prime Minister, as stated in the announcement, he emphasized the fundamental role of Unifil and the need to continually ensure the security of this international mission.
Meloni and Erdoganfinally, “exchanged views on the situation of Syrian refugees in the region and how we can continue to support Ukraine’s efforts for a just and lasting peace.”
