According to a report by the Italian Statistical Institute Istat, births in Italy continue to decrease.
In more detail, last year they were declared in the country’s records, 13,000 fewer births than in 2022, with a decrease of 3.4%.
Which means that only six children were born per thousand inhabitants. This decreasing trend, according to the data so far, continues this year as well. From January to July, 4,600 fewer children were born compared to the same period in 2023.
According to Istat, the decline in birth rates is due, in addition to the clear tendency to reduce the number of children that families in the country have, to one more element: the decreasing number of women, aged up to 49, who live in the country.
In couples with Italian parents, the decrease in births in 2023 was around 3.9% compared to the previous year. In couples in which one of the parents is a foreigner, the birth rate fell by 1.5%, while in couples with foreign parents the relative percentage is 3.1%.
