The president of Brazil Luís Inácio Lula da Silva canceled his trip to Russia for the BRICS summit after doctors advised him to temporarily avoid long-haul flights after hitting his head in an accident at home.
The presidency said in a statement that Lula, who was originally scheduled to leave at 5 p.m. local time today, will now participate in the BRICS summit via video conference.
The diplomatic forum that was founded 15 years ago of the main emerging markets Brazil, Russia, India, China it has since expanded to include South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
According to a medical bulletin issued by the Hospital Sírio-Libanês in Brasília, Lula “was advised to avoid long-distance air travel, but can carry out his normal duties”.
The report adds that Lula has a wound in the “occipital region” on the back of his head.
