The cops certainly knew who they were arresting when they put the handcuffs on Rajon Rondo earlier this year… as police body camera footage, obtained by TMZ Sportsshows that officers discussed his NBA career shortly after pulling him over.
The stop, as we previously reported, happened on January 28th in Jackson County, Indiana… after authorities alleged that Rondo’s black Tesla did not have a license plate properly attached to the back.
The video shows that after initially talking to Rondo and getting his information… the officers returned to their cruiser – and talked for a few moments about the time the former Celtics guard spent on the field.
“He’s a former basketball player,” one of the officers can be heard saying in the footage. “He played for several NBA teams.”
It should be noted… the man also added, “Not that I care, I’m just telling you.”
Later during the stop, one of the officers present brought up Rondo’s NBA career – asking him point blank, “You played in the NBA, didn’t you, buddy?”
When Rondo said yes and for how long, the officer exclaimed, “Wow!”
Unfortunately for Rondo, his fame didn’t help him much during his run-in with the police… as he was still arrested by the police after they said they discovered a small amount of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a gun in his car.
The 38-year-old four-time All-Star, who last played in the NBA during the 2021-22 season, was hit with three charges during the encounter… although in September he reached a legal agreement with prosecutors to close the case.
Rondo agreed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of illegal possession of a firearm… and in exchange, authorities dropped the other two charges he faced. He was sentenced to 180 days in prison… but the sentence was suspended, meaning he will spend the time on probation if he avoids further trouble.
