Dozens of bomb threats this week and today have targeted scheduled Indian airline flights, in India and abroad, leading to flight diversions and even the intervention of fighter jets.
All flights landed without problems, but the wave of threats caused chaos and fighter jets were sent to escort the planes, mainly in the airspace of Britain and Singapore.
“Very strict measures” will be taken, the Indian government and civil aviation authorities have warned.
New Delhi did not say how many threats were made last week, but the Times of India newspaper and News18 television reported at least 70 bomb alerts on international flights since October 13.
On Saturday alone, 30 alerts were registered and today 20 new threats targeted different companies, bringing the total to 90.
Indian airline IndiGo has confirmed that threats were made against six of its flights today.
“The safety of our passengers and crew is a priority,” the company said in a press release, noting that it would take “all necessary precautions” in coordination with authorities.
The impact of flight delays and diversions is very significant for companies.
At least one person, a minor, was arrested in India, but the threats continued.
“All those responsible for the disturbance will be identified and prosecuted,” Indian Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said following Wednesday’s arrest.
On Platform X, an anonymous account was suspended after posting bomb threats against at least 40 flights on Friday and Saturday, according to an article in the Indian Express newspaper.
Threats were made against Indian and international companies, especially American and New Zealand companies.
“Bombs were planted on the aircraft… No one will get out alive. Hurry up,” the suspended account read repeatedly, according to the newspaper.
