We’ve become so accustomed to endless promotional cycles and IP-based experiences with built-in fanbases that we forget that the first thing we see before a new film is released is its title. There’s a certain art to film titles, especially ones that aren’t already based on something else. A title only has about one to five words to indicate exactly what the audience expects if they decide to watch it. You know exactly what you’re getting into when you sit down Foreigneror pulp Fictionor Interstellaror Everything everywhere at the same timeand even if you haven’t seen anything other than the title, you can guess its contents and probably come up with something pretty close.
Since it takes a lot of effort to create a great title, there are always times when that effort doesn’t work out. Cinema is filled with attempts at catchy movie titles that do the exact opposite of gripping and are mostly memorable for the amount of confusion they inspire in those who see them. You see a lot of this in big franchise films with a million subtitles, but it can even happen in independent films with titles of just a few words. It’s just the wrong words, in the wrong order, with the wrong kind of vibration.
Still, it’s always fun to look back at bad movie titles from recent memory, and because we’ve done it before in a list that covers all cinematic historyWe decided to take a closer look at more modern failed attempts to create the perfect title. Here, then, are the ten worst film titles of this century, so far. There is always room for more.
