Dame Dash Explains Her Appearance in R. Kelly’s ‘Fiesta’ Music Video
Earlier this week, Dash took to Instagram to share a clip of yourself. In the video, Dash read a question from a fan that appeared to reference R. Kelly: “Especially considering what the entire industry knew about him, why were you in the ‘Fiesta’ video?”
In turn, Dash explained:
“…when Jay was still doing business with R. Kelly, I went back and told Aaliyah, like, ‘Hey, they’re still doing projects, they have singles together, they’re shooting videos. I don’t want to go to video. I don’t want to be or have any part of that.’”
Dash said that in response, Aaliyah encouraged him to continue participating in Jay’s business with Kelly.
“What she said was, ‘I don’t want to cause any problems. It would probably draw more attention to it. I just want to heal. I just want to put it aside and get as far away from it as possible. I don’t want to hear about it.’” Dash said, recalling Aaliyah’s alleged words.
Additionally, Aaliyah allegedly told Dash she was “happy” with their romance and where it was headed. Before concluding her thoughts, the singer reportedly shared two rules that Dash should follow.
“’Just don’t appear in any scenes with him and don’t take any pictures with him,’” the singer allegedly instructed Dash.
Ultimately, Dash explained that while shooting the ‘Fiesta’ music video, he “stayed” in his trailer most of the time. However, when the time came for him to appear in the video, he only did scenes in which he appeared only alongside Jay-Z.
Reactions on social media
Social media users shared mixed reactions to Dash’s explanation in their comments section.
Instagram user @emiliaisemmalee wrote, “It means a lot to people going through sexual violence, etc., to have loved ones by their side and open enough to listen to how they prefer to navigate life and complex situations. I’m so grateful you two have each other. I hope more people experience love and support like this, in public and private. from business information to character insights, thank you for everything ma’am 🙏🏿☮💜♾”
Although Instagram user @keyknozart added, “👏👏 it’s sad that you have to explain yourself, you made that clear before and there’s no reason to close 🧢 Aaliyah, from what I remember hearing how she articulated things, I believe she thought that way, so it made sense and was believable! I didn’t need to meet her to find out! Thank you for staying solid for the queen👸🏽 you are a true lady for being open and sincere, you are respected!
Instagram user @jacked_johnfitness wrote: “Watching the video, I would never have guessed that his girl had told him that R Kelly was his victimizer.”
While Instagram user @razorramone1 added, “But you’re still in the video! Terrible explanation. You’re either on board or you’re not.”
Instagram user @mizhyatt022 wrote: “Thank you for supporting her. After what she went through, I know her actions made her feel safe and supportive. Don’t listen to negative people.”
While Instagram user @rangesport1 added, “I don’t believe this nonsense. If Dame had a problem with R. Kelly, he wouldn’t be in the video period…”
Instagram user @promotionsbytahra_ent wrote: “You don’t need to keep explaining yourself, because if they weren’t around, they wouldn’t understand.”
The music executive previously spoke out about Jay-Z’s choice to work with R. Kelly despite the allegations surrounding Aaliyah
As The Shadow Room Previously reported, in July 2023, Dash appeared on the ‘That’s F*****d Up’ podcast where he talked about learning what Kelly “did” to Aaliyah.
At the time, Dash also explained that he “couldn’t believe” that Jay-Z chose to do a full project, ‘The Best of Both Worlds,’ with Kelly “knowing that he had raped my girl.”
“If you look at it, I’m not there as an executive producer… Just don’t put my name on it. I don’t want money from this. “, he said at the time. “And they did it twice – it was just egregious.”
