Details about brutal attack by teenagers on elderly men
WUSA9 reports that on Tuesday, October 15, the 15-year-old girl who allegedly suggested the plan testified. She revealed that she and her friends were at a skate park in Silver Spring, Maryland, but wanted more excitement when they got back to their home in DC. So, she proposed that they “find someone to hit.” When prosecutor Gabrielle Logaglio asked why, the girl replied: “Because we were bored.”
According to WUSA9, the group headed to DC’s Brightwood neighborhood around 11 p.m. There, they reportedly saw an unknown man attacking Reggie Brown, who was lying on the ground. The 15-year-old girl reportedly asked the man if they could take part in the attack. After he agreed, everyone chased Brown, who tried to escape after the man briefly walked away to talk to the teens. The Washington Post mentions that Reggie took evening walks, a routine his family said he followed to cope with the stress of cancer treatments.
Surveillance footage showed the teens and the unknown man chasing Brown down an alley until they caught him. Then, the 15-year-old’s younger sister allegedly recorded the incident on her cell phone as the group taunted and beat Brown.
The Washington Post adds that the teens pulled down his pants, grabbed his belt and hit him. PEOPLE also notes that the video captured a girl cheering, “he is leaking,” while referring to Reggie’s bleeding head.
PEOPLE said officers found Reggie Brown dead at the scene when they arrived. The chief medical examiner later performed an autopsy, revealing he suffered blunt force trauma consistent with homicide, according to a previous statement of the Metropolitan Police Station.
More on Reggie Brown and what’s next for the teens
During previous court proceedings, homicide detective Harry Singleton testified that Reggie Brown had disabilities and health problems, including two missing fingers on each hand and a dinner plate on his head.
The Washington Post reports that the 15-year-old who testified received a guaranteed three-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to a lesser charge. The media outlet adds that another teenager pleaded guilty in the case, but has not yet received a sentence. If the two girls on trial are convicted, they could spend time in secure detention until they turn 21, before being released.
