The critical turning point in which the municipalities find themselves at the moment was highlighted by the president of KEDE Lazaros Kyrizoglou, welcoming the meeting of the autonomous bodies of Central Greece and Thessaly that took place today in Lamia and is included in the pre-conference dialogue with a view to annual ordinary conference of KEDEwhich will take place from 7th to 9th November in Rhodes.
Kyrizoglou noted the many and intractable problems that municipalities face to add that “a new approach is needed, a new political agenda of demands, decisions and actions that lead to its dynamic restart, from the Autonomous Government itself, which is also the objective conference center”.
The president of KEDE made an extensive reference to the positions, processes and responses that Local Self-Government must have, since in the next period the government will present the New Charter and the New Code of Self-Government, noting that “a new position framework that provides substantial content and responds in a creative and positive way to the new agenda that opens in the next period”, to add that “our purpose is a substantial reform, with municipalities at the center of the new governance system, with emphasis on decentralization of roles, responsibilities, resources and responsibilities”.
Speaking about the TA’s finances, he said that “the municipalities still do not have the capacity to cover operational costs” and sounded the alarm on the municipalities’ finances, asking for their financial support.
Metropolitan Simeon of Fthiotida welcomed the KEDE pre-conference meeting, while the mayor of Lamia, Panourgias Papaioannou, the regional governor Fanis Spanos and the president of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Central Greece, Nikos Souliotis, spoke.
During the meeting in Lamia, issues related to Civil Protection and the Climate Crisis, Rural Development and the role of Local Government in managing issues related to rural development, demography, the preservation of the population in the countryside, and the extroversion of agricultural products, while policy proposals for mountainous areas were also discussed.
