A new intelligence chief has been appointed in Egypt, one of the countries mediating the war between Israel and Palestinian Hamas, pro-government media reported today.
Hassan Rashad replaces Abbas Kamel, a close associate of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and former director of the presidential office, who has held the position of intelligence chief since 2018.
Abbas Kamel was appointed advisor to the president and his envoy, as well as general coordinator of security services, according to the Extra News television network.
Along with Qatar and the United States, two other countries playing a mediating role, Egypt has failed to secure a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza war, which erupted following Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Rashad was Kamel’s deputy, according to Extra News, a media outlet linked to the state’s intelligence services.
