Chancellor Olaf Solz said he was willing to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin about a “just peace” in Ukraine, stressing, however, that decisions cannot be taken in Ukraine’s absence or without the agreement of partners.
Speaking on the Bundestag plenary, the chancellor called for diplomatic negotiations to end the war, including with Russia, and appeared open to direct negotiations with Vladimir Putin. “However, decisions should never be made above Ukraine’s head,” Soltz clarified and declared that “the time has come – in addition to Ukraine’s clear support – to do everything possible to understand how this war will not last forever .” Potential talks with the Russian president should also be held “in coordination with our closest partners”, noted Olaf Solz.
The chancellor also referred to Russian soldiers, who, he said, “sacrifice themselves every day to the imperialist madness of the Russian president, for a policy aimed at the country’s growth, which is no longer allowed to happen in this way in Europe” . .
