The Superliga aims to return to global prominence, but this time with its official launch as a football competition. The information was confirmed by Berd Reichart, general director of A22 who looks after the interests of the new competition, in statements to the German magazine Kicker.
“At this moment we are focusing mainly on technological partnerships and the resulting business model, because we are convinced that fans deserve a cheaper and improved experience in front of the screens”Reichart said.
Spanish newspaper As added that A22 sources have identified September 2025 as the appropriate date for the official start of the Super League.
Last year, the Super League project received a major boost again following the decision of the European Court of Justice in December 2023, which found UEFA and FIFA to be monopolistic bodies.
A victory for Super League fans, even if the EU Court of Justice did not recognize any authority over the new competition, as it was not called upon to judge it directly.
But Reichart considers this a huge victory. “The DEE’s most recent decisions have demonstrated that federations can no longer avoid bringing their activities and statutes into compliance with EU law. The pillars on which the federations’ monopoly has so far rested are crumbling”he said, in a reference that also takes into account the decision in the Diarra case.
The impressive results resulting in defeats to Manchester City and Bayern Munich seem to have proved UEFA right, but there have also been lopsided results such as the Bavarians’ 9-2 defeat of Dinamo Zagreb or Borussia Dortmund’s victory over Celtic 7-1.
“Games must be organized in such a way that there is true competition on equal terms. For this reason, we propose a classic league format with home and away games, followed by playoffs.”was Reichart’s last comment.
