Scandinavia’s leading sales company REinvent has embarked on Norway’s true crime “Escapeing Bolivia,” currently filming in Cape Town, South Africa, following a preliminary shoot in Oslo.
Fenomen (“Rod Knock”) and long-time group 4 ½ (“Out Stealing Horses”) are producing for TV2 Norway, in co-production with German publisher NDR and Oslo Movie Fund.
Helmer Anna Gutto, behind Lionsgate’s “Paradise Freeway,” starring Juliette Binoche, is a conceptual director, working alongside episode creator and author Emily Beck, attached to Netflix’s “Royalteen.” Headlining the six-part sequence are Jakob Oftebro (“Agent Hamilton”), Ella Øverbye from Dag Johan Haugerud’s “Desires,” Josephine Tetlie, Lisa Hovden and Danish actor Joachim Fjelstrup (“The Woman with the Needle”).
The gift is inspired by the notorious drug case of three Norwegian women aged 17, 18, 21, who were arrested in Bolivia after being caught in 2008 with 22kg of cocaine in their luggage. Two managed to escape – one with a baby, helped by a journalist – while the third stayed behind.
Next, we follow Ida, her sister-in-law Michelle and Ida’s lover, Cecilie, as they are arrested at the Bolivian airport with suitcases full of cocaine. They are sentenced to prison in one of the most dangerous women’s prisons in the world. Quickly, Ida discovers that she will not trust her friends, nor the Norwegian government’s ability to save her. She begins to plan her escape.
“After eight years of growth and analysis, it’s great that we’re finally filming!” stated Beck, who co-wrote the story with Helena Nielsen, Ingrid Haukelidsæter. “I’m sure that “Escaping Bolivia” will contact, interact and challenge the viewer. The series focuses on friendship, betrayal and love, and something as unique and enchanting as motherhood and doing anything for the people you love. At the same time, the series will also be about what you are willing to do and sacrifice to avoid waste and having to grow up behind bars,” she said.
Helene Aurø, director of sales and advertising at REinvent, said: “We are very proud to have chosen ‘Escapeing Bolivia’. It’s an incredible story that needs to be told and we’re confident the series will find an audience around the world.” Supply is planned for the end of 2025.
Other premium titles on REinvent’s Mipcom slate include Finnish thriller drama “L/over,” the first live-action fiction show started by Marika Makaroff, founder of “Moominvalley” production company Gutsy Animations. The final series, starring Krista Kosonen and Jani Volanen, is expected to premiere in Finland on MTV3/C Extra in 2025.
Two high-end Icelandic shows will also be teased to consumers: “Reykjavik 112,” based on best-selling novelist Yrsa Sigurdardóttir, billed as a “brilliant, modern Nordic take on the crime thriller genre,” and the highly anticipated biopic “Vigdis.” from the creatives “Blackport” by Vesturport prodco, about the former president of Iceland, the enduring Vigdís Finnbogadóttir.
