The 2025 Oscars need a host, given that the man who has been most in charge over the last ten years has already surpassed it.
Jimmy Kimmel announced during the summer of 2024 that fans hoping to see him host the Oscars next year would be missing out.
Kimmel is out, as is the comedian who is presumed to be next in line for the show.
So who will host the Oscars in 2025? Honestly, we have no choice and the new rumor is that we may not have just one host next year, but TWO!
Jimmy Kimmel drops out of hosting the Oscars
The dawn star served as Oscar presenter four times in the last ten years, having hosted Hollywood’s biggest night in 2017, 2018, 2023 and 2024.
In an interview several months after the last show, Jimmy revealed that he would not be returning in 2025. It turns out that the show has a very high price tag.
“I just decided I didn’t want to deal with it this year,” Kimmel said.
“It was awesome last year. You end up putting everything off until after the Oscars, and then you have to do everything you promised to do after the Oscars, after the Oscars. I did two years (2017 and 2018), it went well. I did two more years (2023 and 2024), it went well. I thought I’d take a little break.”
Most of what he “postponed” had to do with his own show, Jimmy Kimmel livethat despite all your talk about going out late at nighthe still loves it.
“I’m not good at balancing. I really am not,” he added.
“It’s not one of my strong points. I’m all in when it comes to something like the Oscars. I think about it morning and night, and when I have ideas I want to work on them, and then my nightly schedule feels like a hassle. We have all our writers from the show working at the Oscarsso it distracts them. It’s fun to do and it’s good when it works, but for me, it was too much to do it three years in a row.”
John Mulaney also left
There was a rumor that after Jimmy Kimmel stopped hosting the Oscars in 2025, the next person approached was the comedian John Mulaney.
One of the highlights of the 2024 show was John’s ‘Field of Dream’ bit during the Best Sound award presentation. Additionally, he also hosted the Governors Awards.
By all accounts, he was a success. But John turned down the offer, citing his busy schedule juggling so many different projects.
Fingers crossed this means “Everybody’s in LA” is getting renewed by Netflix!
Who will host the 2025 Oscars?
So where does this leave us? Glad you asked!
In fact, the door is open for some incredible talent to step in and take the reins. The obvious choices are people who have hosted the show before and can make a triumphant return.
Whoopi Goldberg is tied with Kimmel for the number of times she’s hosted the show (again, that’s 4) and since she’s taking a break from The View anyway, she could easily extend the hiatus. (Plus, she’s on ABC, so, you know – synergy!
We could also resort Ellen DeGeneres. She claims it is leaving Hollywood forever after his current stand up tour. What better farewell than doing the best stand up show in Hollywood! Also, your icon selfie needs an update.
While both could be candidates, here are the top contenders for the show that’s getting attention right now.
Hugh Jackman will be the favorite to present the 2025 OscarsAlong with Ryan Reynolds
Hugh hosted the Oscars in 2009 and remains one of the most beloved opening acts in the show’s history. Additionally, he was in the biggest box office hit of the year as half of the Deadpool and Wolverine. Checks a lot of boxes. Maybe this time he’ll swap Beyoncé for Taylor Swift to play with him! (No shade from Bey, I’d just like to see Taylor once, you know!)
In fact, the rumor Deadline is that the plan is to definitely include Hugh and Ryan as part of an all-star ensemble of rotating hosts. But honestly, this can be very confusing. Better to just keep the idea of them together or Hugh alone.
Maya Rodolfo and Kristen Wiig would be a dream team
Tina Fey and Amy Poeler with the 2010s dream team, let’s give it to these two FINALLY. The present together all the time and its parts are always talked about the next morning. Also, let’s not forget that Maya will end her special appearance as Kamala Harris on SNL for the 2024 election. She will be available! (Apple+ – clear your calendars!)
That being said, Amy Poehler’s name is being floated as a solo host, according to Deadline. She participated in the biggest animated film of the year (Image: Getty Images)Inside Out 2) and she has more than proven herself to be a competent hostess. But without Tina? Do we all really want this?
Chris Rock: a triumphant return?
Think about the headlines! Chris Rocha hosted in 2005 and 2016 and is more popular than ever, but it would be a big deal to have him return to the scene of the crime. In other words, it would be the first time he returned to the Oscars since he was surprisingly slapped by Will Smith when presenting an award in 2022.
Billy Crystal is our top choice
The only person to present the Oscar more times than Billy Crystal (9) is Bob Hope (19). And frankly, no one did it better than Billy. He is a real showman. Funny. Musical. Politician at the right times. And 9 is an odd number. Give the man a nice 10. Plus, it looks like we need a legend to step in this year. Someone who doesn’t settle for anything less than a show stopping everyone from opening will be talking the next day! Now, there is talk that he is too “old” for the show. Nonsense! Do you know who the best SNL guest host has been over the last 20 years? White Betty. And she was almost 80 years old at that time!
