A group of 16 migrants were transferred from Italy to newly created detention centers in Albaniaunder the bilateral agreement Meloni-Rama.
The transfer is part of a controversial plan to process thousands of asylum seekers outside Italy’s borders. Despite criticism of the plan, both at home and abroad, Prime Minister Georgia Meloni classified the measure as a “good example”.
“This is a new, bold and unprecedented path, but one that fully reflects the European spirit and has everything needed to be followed by other states outside the EU,” he said on Tuesday.
Meloni’s government officially opened the two centers in Albania on Friday. Rome plans to process thousands of male migrants seeking asylum in the country after intercepting them in international waters as they try to cross to Europe from the coast of North Africa.
