- 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is now the fastest production car in GM history
- Stock example reached 233 mph during recent testing
- A more powerful Corvette Zora is believed to be coming
THE 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1the current flagship of the C8 Corvette family, has just gone where no production Corvette has gone before.
Chevrolet announced on Tuesday that the new ZR1 reached a top speed of 370 km/h during a recent test session on the high-speed oval that is part of the ATP automotive test site in Papenburg, Germany.
The car had the standard ZR1 chassis and aerodynamic package, with a standard short-wicker spoiler. It was also equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires on aluminum wheels and used a new maximum speed mode that Chevy developed for use on the racetrack.
Behind the wheel was General Motors President Mark Reuss, who reached speed while the engine was at redline, in sixth gear. And just to make things official, he drove the car in two directions, on the north and south straights, to reach an average speed in both directions. The process takes wind and gradients into account and is typically necessary to get into the record books.
Some of the ZR1’s competitors include impressive machines like the Lamborghini Revuelto (350 km/h) and the Ferrari SF90 Stradale (340 km/h). There are faster cars, but they all cost more than $1 million.
The ZR1 won’t hit showrooms until next year. Chevrolet hasn’t announced a price, but starting prices are expected to be in the upper $100,000 range. Fully loaded examples can reach the $200,000 markwhich would be yet another first for America’s sports car.
That’s steep, but the ZR1 comes with a maximum of 1,064 hp generated by a newly developed 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8, which is mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The ZR1 also stands out from the rest of the Corvette Range 2025 thanks to a unique split rear window that serves not only as a nod to the design used on the 1963 Corvette, but also an aerodynamic function. An available ZTK performance package also adds a number of extra aerodynamic modifications that together increase maximum downforce to 1,200 pounds.
Chevy is believed to be working on another, more powerful Corvette variant possibly nicknamed Zora. It’s expected to have even more power thanks to the addition of a front-mounted electric motor, meaning the ZR1’s top speed could soon be surpassed. However, Chevy has not mentioned any plans for additional Corvette variants beyond the ZR1.
