Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris today unveiled new proposals to attract black male voters.
These proposals include non-refundable commercial loans for small businesses and access to a new legal marijuana industry for recreational use.
Both Harris’ campaign team and Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, have expressed concern about whether black men will turn out en masse on Nov. 5, as they have in previous elections, and support Harris or her Republican opponent, Donald Trump.
The new set of proposals is part of Harris’ effort to specifically reach out to black men and give them a greater role in her campaign as it enters the final stretch.
His proposals include one million fully non-refundable loans of up to $20,000 for entrepreneurs in underserved communities and a commitment to legalize recreational marijuana and ensure black entrepreneurs have access to this new industry.
Other proposals include increasing access to the cryptocurrency industry for African Americans and adopting a national black-centered health equity initiative that addresses diseases such as sickle cell disease, which are disproportionately seen in this community.
Although Harris’ plans concern the black community, the candidate herself seeks to show how proposals in the field of economics benefit the entire male population.
More than a quarter of young black people say they will vote for Trump, according to the results of a poll conducted in September by the NAACP, the country’s largest civil rights organization.
In 2020, President Joe Biden received about 80% of black male voters.
