The EU condemns all attacks against UN missions and expresses its “extremely serious” concern about the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) attacks against UNIFIL in Lebanon, which resulted in the injuries of many peacekeepers.
In the statement issued by High Representative Josep Borrell on behalf of the EU, he notes that such attacks against UN peacekeepers constitute a serious violation of international law and are completely unacceptable and must stop immediately.
It states that all actors have an obligation to take the necessary measures to ensure the security of UN personnel and property and to respect the inviolability of UN facilities at all times. “We urgently await explanations and an in-depth investigation from the Israeli authorities into the attacks against UNIFIL, which plays a fundamental role in the stability of the South. Lebanon» highlights the high representative.
At the same time, the EU expresses its deep concern about the continued launch of rockets from Hezbollah to Israel, which must stop, and to the IDF attacks on populated areas of Lebanon, causing heavy civilian casualties and displacing many. “We ask all parties to respect International Humanitarian Law, in all circumstances”, he highlights.
Finally, the EU reiterates its call for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and for all parties to commit to and work towards the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701.
