Yamaha R9 revealed, lightest aluminum frame of any Yamaha supersport
Yamaha YZF-R9 revealed, an all-new supersport motorcycle designed to expand its popular R-Series lineup. Positioned between the YZF-R7 and the flagship YZF-R1, the YZF-R9 combines stylish aesthetics with advanced performance features.
Differentiated design and aerodynamics
The YZF-R9’s design follows Yamaha’s R-series DNA, featuring a sleek, aggressive look with sleek, aerodynamic bodywork. The front fairing, which integrates winglets to improve downforce, gives the bike a distinctive presence. A centrally mounted LED projector headlamp, flanked by LED DRLs, highlights the motorcycle’s menacing front profile. Its side fairings and rear section also reflect sharp lines, complementing the overall sporty aesthetic.
The motorcycle is available in three color options: Team Yamaha Blue, Intensity White/Redline and Matte Raven Black.
Lightweight frame and performance-focused suspension
At the heart of the YZF-R9 is Yamaha’s Deltabox gravity-cast aluminum frame, which the company claims is the lightest ever used on any Yamaha supersport bike. This lightweight construction improves the bike’s handling and agility, a key factor for riders seeking high performance on both the road and track. The suspension setup consists of a fully adjustable KYB fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear, promising precise handling and comfort.
The bike rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels fitted with Battlax Hypersport S22F tires, designed to offer superior grip in a variety of riding conditions.
Braking and weight distribution
Braking is provided by twin 320mm discs at the front, clamped by Brembo Stylema calipers, and a 220mm disc at the rear. Yamaha designed the YZF-R9 to achieve a near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, improving stability and control at high speeds.
Engine and performance
The YZF-R9 is powered by an 890cc cross-plane inline-triple engine that produces 117 hp, similar to the unit found in the Yamaha MT-09. This engine has been praised for its performance characteristics and distinctive sound. Mated to a six-speed gearbox, the engine is expected to deliver a responsive and exciting drive.
Advanced electronics and driver aids
Yamaha has equipped the YZF-R9 with a series of electronic rider aids, all controlled via an IMU-based system. These include traction control, wheelie control, cornering ABS and various riding modes. Settings for these features can be easily accessed via the switchboard, with information displayed on a TFT screen, offering riders full customization of their experience.
Global availability and pricing
The Yamaha YZF-R9 is currently on sale in international markets, priced at $12,499 (approximately Rs. 10.5 lakhs). While there is no confirmation of a launch in India, if it does arrive, the price is expected to be significantly higher due to import duties and taxes.
With its combination of design, performance and technology, the Yamaha YZF-R9 was created to appeal to enthusiasts looking for a balance between track-ready capabilities and real-world usability.
