Britain today imposed sanctions on Russian troops it says used chemical weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine, accusing Moscow of “cruel and inhumane tactics”.
Among the sanctioned troops are the Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops of the Russian Federation and its chief Igor Kirillov, the government statement said.
“The UK will not stand idly by while (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and his mafia state flout international law, including the Chemical Weapons Convention,” Foreign Secretary David Lammy said in a statement.
Russian state news agency TASS, citing Moscow’s embassy in London, says accusations that Russia used chemical weapons are unfounded.
The new sanctions come a week after the British government sanctioned 16 members of the Russian cybercriminal gang Evil Corp, a group used by Russia to carry out operations against NATO allies.
