Los Angeles County District Attorney Shares Important Announcement Regarding Menendez Brothers Case
According to CNNOn Thursday, October 3, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón revealed that prosecutors are reviewing new evidence in the Menéndez brother’s case. The outlet reports that prosecutors obtained a letter previously written by Erik that “corroborates allegations that he was sexually abused by his father.”
“I’ve been trying to avoid dad. It’s still happening, Andy, but it’s worse for me now. I don’t know how to explain it… I never know when it’s going to happen and it’s driving me crazy. Every night I lie awake thinking he might get in. I need to get this out of my head,” says the letter, supposedly addressed to Erik’s cousin, by Fox 35 Orlando.
Lawyers for Erik and Lyle Menendez reportedly asked the court to overturn the brothers’ 1996 conviction for the 1989 murder of their parents, José and Mary “Kitty” Menéndez. Despite this, the vehicle reports that Gascón claims that the brothers committed the murder. Therefore, his office will simply review the new evidence and “make a decision on whether a new sentence is warranted.”
“We didn’t decide on a result. We are reviewing the information”, Gascón reportedly explained.
Cliff Gardner, attorney for the Menendez brothers, reportedly reacted to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s decision with a statement.
“Given today’s very different understanding of how sexual and physical abuse affects children – both boys and girls – and the remarkable new evidence, we think the new sentence is the appropriate outcome,” Gardner said. “The brothers served more than 30 years in prison. That’s enough.”
Put CNNa hearing has been scheduled for Friday, November 29.
Kim Kardashian defends the release of Erick and Lyle Menendez from prison
According to the vehicle, Erik and Lyle Menendez were 18 and 21 years old, respectively, when they committed the murder of their parents. After several trials, they were sentenced to life in prison, while “prosecutors claimed there was no evidence of any sexual abuse.” Additionally, the brothers were accused of trying to gain control of their parents’ multimillion-dollar estate.
Additionally, on Thursday, October 3, Kim Kardashian weighed in on the brothers’ conviction and sentencing. In a letter published by NBC NewsKardashian called for the Menendez brothers to be released from prison.
“…As is often the case, this story is much more complex than it appears on the surface. Both brothers said they were sexually, physically and emotionally abused for years by their parents,” reads part of Kardashian’s letter. “…The media turned the brothers into monsters and sensationalized eye candy – two rich, arrogant kids from Beverly Hills who killed their parents out of greed. There was no room for empathy, much less sympathy. Erik and Lyle had no chance of a fair trial in this scenario.”
Kardashian goes on to state that the brothers were not supported amid their allegations of sexual abuse because of their gender.
“Many people believe the brothers’ crimes are unforgivable – but what about the decades of alleged abuse they suffered as children?” she adds.
Before concluding, Kardashian explains that she “spent time” with Erik and Lyle Menendez behind bars and believes “they are not monsters.”
“The deaths are not excusable. I want to make this clear. Nor your behavior before, during or after the crime. But we shouldn’t deny who they are today, at age 50,” she wrote. “…I don’t believe that spending a lifetime in prison was the right punishment for this complex case. If this crime had been committed and tried today, I believe the outcome would have been dramatically different… With their case back in the spotlight – and considering the revelation of a letter from 1988 from Erik to his cousin describing the abuse – my hope is that Erik and Lyle Menendez’s life sentences are reconsidered.”
