Pete Rose has arguably signed more autographs than any player in MLB history, but that doesn’t mean “Charlie Hustle” memorabilia isn’t experiencing a significant increase in value in death, according to a top pro.
TMZ Sports Activities I talked to David Kohlerfounder and president of SCP Auctionsjust days after Rose’s death… and we asked if items signed by the legendary Reds player have increased in value following Pete’s death on Monday.
“Every time a very important person in a recreation of a great American game, like baseball, walks by, there is a lot of curiosity. I’m sure on eBay there are even more sales now for his memorabilia,” Kohler told us, while noting, “For a long, long time, (Pete) has been in every aspect of cardboard, making appearances, signing a whole contract a lot of balls and tacos. He did that for a long time.”
The regulation of supply and demand determines that, with an outsized supply, costs will fall. Now, with Pete’s passing, unfortunately there will be no extra signed objects, hence the bump.
However, David says there are some objects that have important value.
“Now, your game-used items, your rare starter pieces, your high-end baseball cards from the early 60s, your debut year was 1963 and early 70s, these items will improve in value. The rarity, the scarcity”, Kohler informed us.
What is the Holy Grail, we ask.
“In terms of playing cards, it could be your PSA 10, a rookie card from the 1963 tops. There is only one way to classify it. It has traded over the last 10 years for $717,000. Today, that card will be worth more than a million dollars, simply put.
In fact, we told the story… Rose was discovered deceased by a family member at their Las Vegas home after returning from a book signing in Nashville.
Pete’s Hall of Fame teammate, Tony Pérezwho was with him at the autograph session, told us that his friend of 6+ years was not feeling well on Sunday.
