Mazda has issued a recall of its current generation MX-5 Miata due to airbags that can deploy with excessive force during a collision.
The recall affects everyone MX-5 Miatas built from model years 2016-2023of which 77,670 examples are in the U.S.
According to the recall notice published by NHTSA on September 18 (recall campaign number 24V695000), there is an error in the software of what Mazda calls the sophisticated airbag sensor control module.
Due to the error, in minor collisions, the front airbags may deploy with a greater force instead of the usual lower force activation in such scenarios. This can cause serious injury, especially if the occupant is not wearing a seat belt, the recall notice said.
Mazda said it has become aware of the issue in early 2023 after discovering an incorrect setting for a calibration tool. The automaker said it is not aware of any injuries related to the issue.
The solution requires the dealer to update the control module software, a service that will be performed free of charge.
Affected homeowners will be notified by mail starting November 17th. Anyone looking for more information can contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500 or visit the automaker recall page.
