“No challenge can stop the country from moving forward,” said the Chinese president today Xi Jinping.
Xi Jinping reiterated Beijing’s reunification goals with Taiwan as part of the ceremony to mark 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of Chinafounded on October 1, 1949.
“The path forward will certainly include challenges,” said the Chinese president, calling on the country to overcome uncertainties and risks. “No challenge can stop China’s progress,” CNBC reported.
Xi Jinping’s brief speech was broadcast during the state broadcaster’s daily evening news, with reports that the leader of the People’s Republic of China and other top Chinese leaders entered the ceremony shortly after 5 p.m. local time on Monday.
State media reported that around 3,000 people, including foreigners, attended the event in Beijing.
Xi Jinping: Beijing’s “No” to Taiwan’s “secessionist” measures
During his speech, Xi stressed the need for unification under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party and reiterated Beijing’s “firm opposition” to Taiwan’s “secessionist” moves, while calling on both sides to increase economic and cultural.
At the same time, the Chinese president saw reunification with Taiwan as an inevitable development of history – something he has said before.
Furthermore, Beijing considers the democratically autonomous island to be part of its territory.
No mention of trade tensions
Tensions between China, the US and Europe have risen in recent years, with Western nations increasing tariffs and restrictions on Beijing’s access to advanced technology.
However, Xi did not mention specific countries or trade conflicts in his speech on Monday, portraying China as a proponent of globalization. In fact, he extensively thanked “friendly” countries and supporters of China’s development.
He also highlighted Beijing’s claim to Greater China, saying that “national revitalization” was the hope of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and all Chinese people.
The Beijing leader added that China would “boost” the development of Hong Kong and Macau – both autonomous regions administered by Beijing under the “one country, two systems” principle.
Xi sticks to his views – People’s Bank of China cuts interest rates
It is worth noting that in a 2019 speech celebrating the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping had said that no force could affect China’s development, amid celebrations that included a military parade and large-scale celebrations. Events for the 65th anniversary were more subdued.
Xi’s speech comes in a bullish period in Chinese markets in recent weeks, with mainland China and Hong Kong’s main stock indices recently jumping to their highest level in more than a year, after authorities announced plans to support economic growth. On Thursday, a high-level meeting led by Xi called for an end to the housing crisis and a tightening of fiscal and monetary policy.
While the People’s Bank of China lowered interest rates last week, the Treasury has not yet announced additional fiscal support.
