Takes over as prime minister in Japan and Shigeru Ishiba is calling for early elections, according to Japanese media.
According to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, as well as other national media, which did not reveal their sources, Ishiba’s intention is to dissolve parliament on Wednesday, October 9, and call early elections for October 27.
The former Defense Minister was elected head of the Liberal Democratic Party (FDK) on Fridayof the faction that has governed the country almost continuously since the end of the Second World War.
Ishiba will succeed Fumio Kishida, who decided not to run for a new term in the summer.
On Friday, Isiba said he intended to call new elections to secure a popular mandate “as quickly as possible”, without giving further details.
