Helen “sweeps” the US as the death toll reaches 50.
In particular, millions of Americans remain without electricity today, following Hurricane Helen’s passage through the southeastern United States.
At least 50 people were killed.
Rescuers are struggling to restore power and deal with the aftermath of unprecedented flooding that has destroyed homes, roads and businesses in several states.
The highest number of deaths, a total of 19, was reported in South Carolina. Another 17 people were killed in Georgia, 11 in Florida, two in North Carolina and one in Virginia, according to the toll released by AFP based on authorities locations.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by Hurricane Helen. The road to recovery will be long,” US President Joe Biden said earlier.
