Hurricane Helene devastated the southeastern United States… and the U.S. Coast Guard rescue team is working longer hours – saving people and pups.
A video is circulating online of a dramatic rescue that took place on Thursday off the coast of Sanibel Island, Florida, where Helene disabled a sailboat carrying a man and his dog.
Check out the clip… Coast Guard members are dropped into the water via rope, swimming to the crippled vessel, where the man and his best friend – both carrying rescue vests – jump into the water to meet them.
The intrepid pup and his owner swim with the Coast Guard toward a basket. They go in and the USCG pulls them away… ending what could have been a tragic scenario.
According to Coast Guard social media, this unidentified man and his canine companion were about 25 miles off Sanibel when their 36-foot sailboat was disabled and began taking on water.
The Coast Guard took them to Southwest Florida International Airport, where they met with emergency services, the CG said… reportedly in good medical condition.
Not much luck for the ship… which is still disabled and adrift in the water.
Although this incident occurred just hours before the bulk of the storm, Helene induced a ton of chaos in the southeastern US… killing at least fifty people according to reports and flooding major cities like Atlanta in the process. The storm has been downgraded from Class 4 since Friday.
Fortunately, the Coast Guard was able to avoid a tragic situation here.
