The new suburban railway is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026 West Atticawith a budget of 132 million euros including VAT, financed by the Recovery Fund.
“The West Attica suburb, which began with the signing of the contract in December 2023, is being implemented at a satisfactory pace, its managing director told APE-MPE OSEPanagiotis Terezakis, although there have been “several “thorns”, which are mainly related to expropriations. 90% of these issues have been resolved and the remaining 10% will be resolved soon as per schedule.”
According to the general director of the Organization, the new line “will not only facilitate areas with populations employed in industries throughout the region, but a large number of logistics centers are currently being organized along it, which will be served by the train, at the same time that the load on heavy vehicles traveling on the PATHE axis will be reduced”. As he points out, a commodity train equal to the traffic of 15 to 20 heavy vehicles on road axes.
The existing suburban train modernization project railroad of West Attica and specifically the Department of Upper Liosia – Neos SS Megaron – PS Megaron, with the contractor METKA of the Metlen group, is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF) and will connect West Attica to Athens, the International Airport of Athens, Piraeus and the rest of the railway network.
The project concerns the construction of a new suburban railway branch from Ano Liosia to Megara, within the existing railway corridor of the old railway line to the Peloponnese.
In short, it is a single line 36 km long in the west of Athens, from Ano Liosia to the old Megara Railway Station, on the axis of the old SPAP metric line, serving the densely populated areas of Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, Neraki , Nea Peramos and Mégara .
On Friday, Mr Terezakis, together with the Deputy Minister of Transport, Vassilis Oikonomou, visited the area as part of a postmortem and information from the contractor on the progress of works.
In particular, the project, with a total length of 34.6 km, concerns the renewal of the railway line infrastructure with new materials and its certification in accordance with the principles of interoperability.
Includes installation of 25kV catenary system, signaling and remote control system with ETCS L1 with all station information systems, telecommunications systems and E/M facilities at stations.
The final project will be interconnected with the High Speed Rail (HSR) Line at Ano Liosia railway station.
The project budget also includes the line extension to the old Megaron station, the construction of which is an option that is activated with the approval of the environmental conditions of the section in question.
During its operation, it will serve the following railway stations/stops: ELPE Aspropyrgos, Aspropyrgos, Vamvakia, Elefsina, ELPE Elefsina, Loutropyrgos, Nea Peramos and Megaron Station.
